The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, is a day of remembrance for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Survivors of Canada’s residential school system, as well as the children who never returned and the families and communities forever altered. It acknowledges the forced removal of Indigenous children, loss of language and culture, and the enduring intergenerational trauma caused by these institutions. Rooted in the story of survivor Phyllis Webstad and her orange shirt, the observance was established in 2021 as a direct response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 80 to ensure the history and legacy of residential schools are publicly commemorated.
